Which Players Would Benefit Most from Steroids?

While watching the Giants GameCast today, watching Bonds inch closer to the home run record, I started wondering if there were any OTHER players who could theoretically benefit MORE from using steroids than Barry Bonds has. I’m not just talking home runs, but overall hitting. Bonds is/was certainly one of the game’s best hitters, but are there any other players who may be able to improve their game more than Bonds did by using steroids? I’ve never seen any kind of analysis attempting to answer this question, so I went for it. (more…)

Growing Up

I suppose you’re officially grown up when:

  1. You know you’re never going to live with your parents again.
  2. You know that you can always get a job if you really want one.
  3. You’re not an idiot with money.
  4. You’re able to be in a healthy, stable relationship.
  5. You’re OK with how you look.
  6. You are worldly and culturally aware.
  7. You feel like you’ve been at least moderately productive with your life so far.
  8. You have goals, even if they are a bit vague.
  9. You have grit.
  10. You try to make good decisions.

Texting

People used to talk to each other, but technology is putting an end to that.

When the telephone was invented, people could talk to friends and family down the street, in another state, or on the other side of the planet. Tightly knit communities began to unravel. Instead of playing with the neighborhood kids, children would talk to their friends down the street or across town. When I was younger, I spent more time on the phone with my friends than I did actually hanging out with them outside of school. It was normal. Real human interaction was taking a small hit, but people would still TALK to one another. (more…)

The Birth of Home Run Derby

My friend Rob and I played on our high school varsity baseball team. “Played” might be a stretch—we mostly rode the bench all season. One humid summer evening in Houston, desperate for our baseball fix, we grabbed a plastic bat and ball and started, headed out to the street in front of my house, and started pitching to each other. We made a game of hitting the ball over a light pole. And just like that, Home Run Derby was born. (more…)
